When good food makes you sick

When good food makes you sick

Despite beefed up food safety laws, an increasing number of Americans are getting sick from tainted food.

A new report by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group found that nearly 48 million get sick from contaminated food each year.

According to the study, food borne illnesses have increased 44 percent in the past two years.

Late last year, recalls of tainted peanut butter, popcorn, beef, and breakfast cereals have made the headlines and raised anxiety levels for consumers.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says the most common threats come from raw foods like leafy greens, fresh fruits, and shellfish. Food handled after being cooked can also become contaminated.

Advocate Health Care experts say the best ways to protect yourself from getting sick is to wash raw foods thoroughly before eating, ensure your food is thoroughly cooked and always keep poultry and other raw meats from touching each other and separate from other foods.
