Kane’s injury unfortunately common

The Chicago Blackhawks as well as their loyal fan base are missing right-winger star Patrick Kane in the lineup, especially as they are wrapping up the regular season and heading into the Stanley Cup playoffs season.

Kane, the leading scorer for the Blackhawks with 27 goals and 37 assists was injured this week when he was slammed on a cross-check by Florida defenseman Alex Petrovic, who was penalized on the play. According to a Blackhawks’ press release, the Blackhawks have placed  Kane on long-term injured reserve.

Hockey injuries like Kane’s are quite common and can be severe, according to Dr. Surbhi Panchal, an orthopedic surgeon at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill.

“The direct impact into the boards can cause serious injury,” says Dr. Panchal who sees upper-body injuries in her patients who play hockey—“Especially broken clavicles (collar bones) and shoulder blades.”

Knowing the risks inherent in this contact sport, she says having the right equipment is important.

“My advice is to play smart and wear the right gear that fits the hockey player as they grow,” says Dr. Panchal. “Be aware of your team and your opponent’s team and try to avoid direct contact when possible. And be a good sport. Many of these injuries happen because of players playing dirty.”
