The availability of fast, convenient – albeit unhealthy – food and the ubiquity of junk food marketing has caused Americans to eat more frequently, a disturbing trend that could have dire consequences.

Eating when you’re not hungry can increase your blood glucose level, according to a study by the Cornell Food and Brand Lab. High glucose can lead to complications such as diabetes.

Jaye Leopold, diabetes clinical nurse specialist at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Ill., offers the following five tips to curb mindless eating, thereby better controlling blood glucose levels.
