3 tips for avoiding the ‘Freshman 15’

It’s known as the freshman 15, referring to the weight students gain when they start college. The additional pounds – reportedly closer to three on average for most freshmen and not 15 – is the result of a mix of factors, including snacking on unhealthy foods and eating larger meal portions, coupled with an increase in stress and decrease in activity.

But plumping up isn’t inevitable, freshmen. Madhu Jain, an outpatient dietitian at  Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Health and Fitness Center in Barrington, Ill., offers a few suggestions to escape that fate:
