Health care heroes: Creating the test
Lech Mazur, technical director of molecular for ACL Laboratories, is the lead scientist who was instrumental in launching COVID-19 testing for Advocate Aurora Health at ACL Labs.
Among the many things that make Lech and the Molecular department special, their expertise to develop molecular tests from scratch – investigative procedures in laboratory medicine – is by far the most inspiring.
Lech and the molecular team were able to bring the fully validated COVID-19 assay in-house and online within a 10-day time frame. The COVID-19 in-house test provides results within 24-hours versus the 4 to 9 day turnaround time by outside laboratories.
In addition to COVID-19, Lech and the Molecular team collaborate with Infection Prevention as well as Oncology and are responsible for creating an in-house Oncology Personalized Medicine program based on Next-Generation Sequencing.
Lech is recognized by his peers across Advocate Aurora Health and the industry for his continued developments in molecular pathology.

However, as a reader, I’m left with a lot of questions, like is the test being used, where, and how soon will we be able to test people before we’re encouraged to go back into the workforce. Or how about those of us who are already working side by side with people that we really hope aren’t carrying the virus?
